Membership Information

Established in 1980, the Northeast Regional Honors Council (NRHC) is an organization of students, faculty, and administrators dedicated to the encouragement and support of undergraduate honors learning. The NRHC provides members with opportunities to exchange of information, share ideas, and assist in the continued growth and development of students.

The NRHC encompasses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Quebec, Ontario, and the Maritime Provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

The NRHC welcomes as members both individuals — students, faculty, and administrators — and institutions — colleges, universities, foundations, and government agencies.

Advantages of NRHC
  • Student-Centered Approach: Nearly all presentations at conferences are proposed and presented by students, allowing undergraduates to showcase their research.

  • Scholarships: Students may apply for scholarships to help pay for the NCHC's Partners in the Parks trips. Each year, the NRHC awards scholarships to under-represented students planning to attend the NRHC Conference. This competitive scholarship covers the registration fee and includes a small cash award as well.

  • Publication Opportunities: Students may submit academic and creative writing for consideration for publication to Illuminate, the journal of the Northeast Regional Honors Council.

  • Awards: Each year the NRHC honors two students from member institutions (one from a two-year institution and one from a four-year institution) and honors professionals of the year (honors faculty, honors staff, and honors administrators are eligible).

  • Networking Opportunities: Not only will students get to meet other students from across the region, but honors directors, faculty, and staff can network and share best practices as well. The northeast has a history of strong leaders in the field of honors education.

  • Serve as a Leader: Honors directors, faculty, staff, and students may volunteer to serve on the NRHC Executive Board, giving back to the region and raising the visibility of the home honors program and institution. Honors professionals and students also serve as reviewers for Illuminate and conference proposals.

  • Shape Honors Education in the Northeast: Honors is constantly shifting. With a rich history and strong network, members of NRHC help to advance the quality of student education on the undergraduate level.
